Another poop story...I can't help it.

We've got all kinds of sickness over here.  Flu like stuff that turned into head colds with an insistent cough.  Lucy brought it home and is finally starting to recover after a week.  Rodney and I are still in the middle and Edie just started.  She added an eye infection so that's fun.

But last night, something weird happened and we were up from 11:30pm until 3:30am.  Edie woke up around her usual time at 11:30 just to get resettled but it was clear her cold was bothering her.  I tried for a while to settle her.  Then I tried eye medication because she was complaining of her eyes hurting but through all of this she was acting as if she was constipated.

She would suddenly arch her back and straighten her legs and so "OW Poop!"  And then cry.  She cried for 3 hours basically.  Settling down in between and then screeching again about pooping.  So I just tried to be calming and get her crouching and all those things you do when your child is constipated.  There's not really much else you can do, right?

In the midst of all this, Lucy woke up and wanted me.  Both girls only ask for me at night and get really upset if its Rodney that comes to help.  Poor guy always comes with compassion, patience and lots and lots of emotional support.  Which was needed because Lucy screamed for a good 1/2 hour to 45min. while Edie was screaming.  We finally told her I would come back in after helping Edie which turned out to be a very long time.  Thank goodness she went to sleep.

After checking Edie for rashes or redness, I started worrying because she wouldn't even pee.  She was screaming, "WHOA!" and then crying and holding it in.  She finally had to let it go and she of course felt so much better but she kept wanting to run to the potty afterward and get a fresh diaper.  Then the poop started coming.  She didn't want it in the diaper.  "Whoa! Poop!"  While holding her bottom.

I finally got it.  She just connected the sensation before she had to go and the whole thing freaked her out, completely.  It was like she was terrified of what was going to happen and she didn't want it on her bottom.  She finally allowed herself to relax and let everything do what it was supposed to do and some was done in the potty.  This morning she woke up dry and immediately asked for the potty and was a bit freaked again as the flow started.  I had to force her to sit and comfort her while her face said, "this is so freakin' weird!!!"  However, at the end, when Lucy and I were doing the potty dance for her, I think she started to get that it was ok and normal.  But she is still unsure.  Really funny to me.  Although, if this happens again tonight, I won't be laughing.
