First Solo Day

Today I wondered what it must feel like to live in Sweden or Canada with a ton of paternity leave or what it must be like to live with multiple generations in the same house. Today was the first day that Rodney had to go back to work and I was at home with both Lucy and Edie. Wow...what an adventure. I have to admit that I did not hold it together well this morning. I alternated between taking deep breaths, being frustrated with Lucy and pushing back the tears.

We tried to get out of the house as Edie spent several hours (since 4am being fussy and not sleeping or eating well. Rodney has been having luck in the car so I thought that could give my mind a rest. Luckily Lucy was up for an adventure. Edie cooperated if the car was moving but a stop light that lasted too long started the crying again. I tried KZZZ again and that worked for a couple minutes too but poor Lucy was not as enthused. If you don't know what KZZZ is, its the radio turned on a static station and turned up loud. White noise seems to help sometimes.

There were these moments when it was clear to me that we don't have a system yet. I had too much crap in my backpack or its just bulky or something. Keeping Edie in the car seat doesn't work because it's just one more thing I have to lug from one spot at the playground to another. I haven't been wearing her in a carrier because my body is still healing and I get really sore really quickly. BUT...I may have to suck it up because she will definitely sleep better if she is in a front pack.

It also didn't help that as I was shaking the car seat on a bench at the playground and marveling at the other mothers with two children who seemed to be doing it all so smoothly and gracefully, that I looked down and discovered I was wearing my pj pants. Now...the ones I had on aren't plaid or with silly animal creatures. They are just grey lounge pants but I did wear them to bed last night. AND...I did have clean pants on earlier but Lucy soaked them and my shoes this morning while we were watering the plants. And not just once. After I told her not to do that, she did it again just to see what would happen. Oh...and I only noticed that my hair wasn't combed until I got in the car and looked in the rear view mirror at the kids. Yeah...you know the pony tail you put in when you first get up that has all the bubbles of hair in it and weird parts? Yeah, that one.

And as we were driving home, Lucy wanted some snack so I gave her the container with her black beans and cucumbers. At some point between Edie's shrieks, Lucy said, Oh No...my beans are EVERYWHERE! I looked back and about a 1/2 cup of black beans were all over her lap, squished in the car seat buckle and between the straps and her clothes. I thought about pulling over to clean it up and then remember Edie and I quickly tossed that thought aside. Lucy told me she was trying to sprinkle the beans on top of her cucumber slice. HAHAHA

AND one more thing. Before we even left the house, we had to feed the neighbor's rabbit, Twinkle Star. While we were gone, Murphy found a huge tub of spicy chili on the counter and carried it outside and proceeded to eat the whole thing. Usually I find remnants throughout the kitchen and I expected that today but he clearly waited until he reached the yard before diving in. Needless to say, he has been banned to the yard for the day as his body processes all that.

By 1:45 everyone was napping and I was able to get a 1/2 hour snooze before the cycle of eating, burping and napping started all over again.

So there you have it. Feel free to pass this along to anyone who is thinking about having a second child. OH...and someday soon, I'll have to write about the conversation I had with the pizza lady who wanted to know what it was like to be pregnant and have children. Did I already tell you about that? It was a winner.

Okay, you brought tears to my eyes from the laughter! I could just envision it all and feel your pain! It's much easier to laugh about it when you are an innocent listener :-) I'm confident you'll find a system soon - even with Lucy's black bean adventures!

There's nothing else to say except "love you Gretch, hang in there!"
