So, some of our new parent friends have decided to swap babysitting nights so that we can have some free time with our spouses. Last night, Abigail's mom, Dorothy, came to our house so Rodney and I could have a date. We decided to take a picnic dinner to the beach and watch the sunset and not move for 2 hours. It was a perfect evening! The temperature was great, no wind, the sky had a few clouds so the colors were beautiful. The tide was high and it was just what we needed.
We shared a bottle of wine, some sandwiches and just talked. Then Rodney dug into the bag and brought out our harmonica. Yes, we have a harmonica. It makes for fun at campsites. There was a point in our alcohol consumption that the back and forth, "name that tune" game turned into serenades. It was actually quite lovely. Oh, did I mention that neither of us know how to play the harmonica? The beauty is that they come in one key so any sound that comes out sounds great. Ok, maybe not great, but passable.
So there we are, the sun has gone down, we're 3/4 of the way through the bottle of wine listening to the water lap at the drift wood, watching the nearby ferry unload it's cars when I see a dark object move out of the corner of my eye. Moments later, Rodney spies a rat running along the logs. I quickly jump up, and Rodney starts throwing rocks toward the log to make sure the rat keeps going. We didn't see it again, but our relaxed state was definitely interrupted.
When we got home, Rodney decided to build a fire in the fire pit and sit under the stars for a while longer. I decided to go to bed as I knew that our consistent child would be up at 6am and I would not get to recover. This morning, like clockwork, I was up with Lucy and Rodney slowly wandered an hour or so later. I left to go spend the morning with a girlfriend getting a pedicure and Rodney was about to put Lucy down for her morning nap. I called a couple hours later to discover an exhausted Rodney.
He said he was a bit overwhelmed as he had not been fully prepared for Lucy's more adventurous and skillful explorations around the house. She picked up speed this week. In the time that it took for him to make a sandwich, he was interrupted three times. The first was when she made it to our bedroom to empty my end table of a bowl full of choke hazards and pour the full glass of water onto herself (very little making it to the floor). The second was when he heard some squeaks from the bathroom where he found her holding the toilet seat in her mouth. (yeah, serious YUCK!!) And the third time was when he heard Jack's dog collar but knew Jack was outside. Jack wasn't wearing the collar but Lucy was chewing on it. NICE!!! I think she has had her fill of immune boosting substances today.
We're headed to yet another one year old birthday party this afternoon. This will be number 5 of 6.

It never fails - a wonderful time with your significant squeeze = run and catch me if you can the next 24 hrs.
I thought the bathroom was off limits - I'm guessing now she has mastered the doorknobs too! Ah life - love keeping up with you all
