"Our kid is so advanced!"

ok, so if you have ever worked in childcare or the education field or even had dinner with "those parents", you've heard this phrase before. I used to hear it all the time from parents who really wanted a space in our infant room at the childcare center I used to work in. "I know he's only 9 months old but he's already eating on his own and just yesterday I taught him the sign for 'potty' and when I checked his diaper he was dry! You said you only have room in the Toddler classroom? I know he'd probably be bored if he was with his own age group anyway so I'm sure the Toddler room would be great for him." BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.

Now I'm a parent and...well...she's really advanced!! Just today I put her on her back on the floor and turned my back to write something down. When I turned around she was resting on her side! Really!! So just out of curiosity, and I'm sure a little competitive pride, I looked up when she is supposed to be able to do this. You know those developmental charts are so accurate! (wink, wink) Well, babies aren't supposed to be able to do this until 3 months of age. It's actually supposed to be harder than rolling from tummy to back. So at 2 1/2 weeks, you can understand my glowing parental pride. I thought I should pull out the flash cards soon so she can be prepared for preschool. Hee Hee.

On a less sarcastic note...it is pretty amazing to see what a miracle this whole life thing really is. And if your parents aren't supposed to think you're a genius then who is? I mean really...don't we need someone in our lives to always believe in us?! Well...I'm glad to fill the role for Lucy! We can save the humble lessons for the teenage years. Or were those the college years? Or the 20's, "trying to survive on my own with a whole lot of stubborness" phase? Well, clearly there is plenty of time for that. Right now Lucy gets to be the superstar. These are the moments that help make the tiredness worth it!

p.s. I tried to capture the moment on video but she only did it when the camera was off. She's even smarter than I thought!
