The first parenting stress...

So, may I get a little emotional for a moment? I mean, the hormones are raging but this breastfeeding process has been really challenging. Lucy lost 1lb. 9oz. the first two days of life so we've been trying to get her weight back up since then. Add her inexperienced mother who is still trying to figure out how to breastfeed without pain and the fact that my milk hasn't fully come in yet...well...I've experienced my first intense experience of responsibility for this little one. We are supplementing her feedings using a tiny tube of formula while she breastfeeds and sometimes bottles. We have to wake her up every three hours even though she can easily sleep beyond that. There is something very strange about trying anything you can to wake a sleeping baby.

Despite all this, Lucy is patient and tolerant with it all! She seems so content and peaceful and is having more and more awake times. She is able to focus on our faces, she looks at sounds nearby and is scanning the room. She has a myriad of faces with these funny lips. I'm going to try to capture a few lip poses for you.

We are getting a system figured out though. Rodney is doing the first shift at night until about 3am and then we switch. It's easier for him to stay up and sleep in than me. I knew our opposite sleep personalities would benefit us at some point in our relationship!

We haven't said much about the dogs. They deserve a lot of credit for being fabulous!! They haven't gotten a lot of attention but they are adapting well. Jack seems to be more interested in Lucy than Murphy right now. Jack keeps checking on her. He snifs her bassinet, her head while she's in the bouncy seat and looks for her when she is crying. I think they are going to be good friends.

Here is the progress on the front steps. The wood is the beginning of the forms for the concrete. We are really excited about the blocks and the curved entrance! What curb appeal. We have also stirred up lots of neighbor interest. Dad has met almost everyone on our block in the past three days as they have wandered by.

Lucy looks adorable. Thanks for the pix. Hang in there with the nursing. In a few more days, you and Lucy will both be pros. The pain will stop soon. Those cramps just mean your tummy is getting flatter by the minute.

Don't worry Gretchen. Your experience sounds remarkably familiar....my pain wasn't only tummy cramps. But all mine survived as you know so well. Lucy will continue to do well. Right now you are feeding her from your heart and she seems to be flourishing on all that love. I see a very good Mommy in the video clips.

What a sweetheart! She looks so healthy and content. When I saw the first photos I thought Lucy looked more like Mom, but after seeing the one of Lucy sleeping on Rodney's chest, she's looking more and more like Dad. Uncle Mick and I are really enjoying the photos. Hope we get to see all of you sometime soon.
(And, nice work on the front steps....you'll be the envy of the neighborhood.)
